Learning options

Today's learning environment is focused on the individual and offers a range of learning options to suit different needs and abilities.

Gone are the days when it had to be an academic route or nothing. Now the individual can choose from options that offer vocational and work place learning as well as traditional methods.

These pages will introduce you to the main learning options available. It is important to remember though that these are intended as a guide only and it is possible for individuals to combine the various routes to better suit their needs.

Academic Study

The traditional learning route for individuals to take is full-time academic. This involves classroom style learning and incorporates no practical work experience. Course content is concerned primarily with theory and provides the pupil with an in-depth understanding of a subject.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are government backed training schemes, which provide a structured learning route within a working environment. The schemes are primarily focused on people aged between 16-24 but in certain regions of the UK, schemes are available for older and younger age groups.

Work Related Study

Vocational qualifications are work related courses that provide an introduction to a particular career or industry sector. Vocational qualifications are ideal for pupils who enjoy learning practical skills and are useful for those who already have a good idea of the type of job they would like to have.

Work and Learn

Leaving school and going straight into the work place doesn’t mean that you have to stop learning. Learning at work is a great way of continuing your education whilst also earning a salary. Qualifications can be achieved either through studying or taking specific training courses.

Diploma

Diplomas are new qualifications that combine theoretical study with practical experience. Currently Diplomas are available in 17 disciplines. The first Diplomas began teaching from September 2008. By 2011 Diplomas will be available in areas across England.
